"Fury", by Aaron Allston, is the seventh novel of the Star Wars "Legacy of the Force" series. This series is by three authors - Allston, Troy Denning, and Karen Traviss, each of whom has three novels. As I've said in earlier reviews, this series is a welcome breath of fresh air following the grim Yuuzhan Vong novels and the icky Dark Nest trilogy.

In this novel, Allston cements his status as the second best of the three "Legacy" authors. Allston wrote several novels in the Star Wars "X-Wing" arc, and here we are reacquainted with some of the best characters from that era (Tycho Celchu, Valen Horn), albeit older, grayer, and with grown children. And although Allston is better at conveying action than dialog, it is the development of characters that gives this novel its appeal. Notably Zekk, who up to now has been portrayed as a two-dimensional chastened puppy dog, suddenly is convincingly shown to be competent, vulnerable, damaged, and very dangerous.

My major complaint would be the overly complex plot and the reliance on improbable coincidence to further the story. At some points the ongoing civil war could be described as a seven-sided conflict: the Galactic Alliance, the Confederation, the Hapes Consortium, the Jedi, Alema Rar, the Sith of Korriban, and the Corellian Koyan Sadras, Five Worlds Prime Minister. On three pivotal occasions, groups are concurrently but unknowingly attacking a common enemy, sometimes starting from opposite ends of the galaxy. Worse, if Jacen is involved, the result is always that (spoiler, but you probably guessed it since the series is not yet complete) he is coincidentally drawn away from certain death. The force is strong with this one, for sure.

I don't believe that this novel is as good as Allston's X-Wing work, but the character development of Zekk, Jag, Jaina, Luke, and Ben make it worth the nickel, not to mention Jacen's irreversible slide to the Dark Side.

And indeed, this does smell vaguely Star Wars. But the fact that this story is about as Star Warsy as an episode of Deep Space 9 is painfully driven home by the attempt to buy your belief with the liberal scattering of names from the films and more successful games. Sadly, the entities in the books connect to their previous incarnations almost solely by name.

The story ducks and weaves around the plot, flourishing the film-names like an 8 year old waving hasbro figurines every time his story hits a thin stretch. Luke may spout "force be with you" or Han might mention the Millenium Falcon, but otherwise the bevvy of familiars are attached to poorly handled mannequins that bear absolutely no resemblance to the characters of the same names.

It's hard to tell whether this is because the author was afraid of genuinely wielding Luke Skywalker or if he had the story written and decided to try and fit famous names to some of the cast to meet executive desires to increase the chance of sales.

That said, when I stopped connecting Luke, Leia, Han, Wedge, R2, C3PO, etc with those in the Lucas films, it became a decent enough time killing read.

I think the best praise I can give this book would be this This could easily be the script for the cut-scenes in a StarWars game, and although you might not find yourself hurrying through a gameplay segment to reach the next cutscene, you would certainly sit through each of them and feel entertained.
The author does a good job of taking the junk that came before this, and turning it in a new and interesting direction. The idea of yet another war in the GFFA is getting a little old, especially since Corellia tried for independence once already and failed. It's beginning to become a "war of the week" with these SW books, and you'd think the authors could come up with something a little more creative, but the side story with Jacen Solo is at least interesting and makes this worth the read.
Legacy of the Force just keeps getting better. The whole cast makes it to "Fury."

Jag and Zekk vie for Jaina's affection as hunt Alema Rar. As the war progresses, their relationships slowly become more defined.

The Confederation and Alliance face internal turmoil. All sides want control of Centerpoint Station. Jacen reveals himself to Allana. Leia and Han have to find and extract her while Luke and Ben must seek and kill Jacen. In the end, Jaina has an epiphany which may well bring the end to the war.

There's a lot of action in "Fury," but the pace was not rushed and the characters were well-written. Chapters are short and further divided into sections, keeping the reader abreast of every angle. The only sub-plot I didn't enjoy was the presence of the Sith, who seem to have no other motivation for their actions than the fact that they are Sith. Other than that, it's an excellent read.
