I absolutely adore this entire series, except for this one. It's just too farfetched. The h is supposed to be this hippyish free spirit who is somehow able to relieve others' emotional burdens by absorbing them herself and later purging them through extremely snotty crying jags (which is odd by itself) but many of the events and circumstances meant to portray her quirks leave one wondering if she's just mentally unbalanced and in need of treatment. Women with all their mental faculties don't go home to live with strange men who rescue them on the side of the road. They also don't wander away from their apartment buildings barefoot to walk and bicycle through the city for hours. Her repeated claims that she needed more from him or her life had no meaning or purpose got on my very last nerve. It's been 18 months since he lost the wife he's loved from childhood and this is his only attempt in his entire life to build a relationship with anyone else. Only an incredibly immature person would demand immediate complete emotional intimacy or else. Then, there's her "homelessness". You know that saying "Pride goeth before a fall"? This chick is super lucky she was sleeping in her car and on the streets in this author's plot line because I shudder to think what her fate would've been in a murder mystery. Yes, she lost her job and, yes, the family home was foreclosed, but she's not without resources. She's just childishly stubborn. She won't tell her brothers the situation because they'd want her to tap into their Ivy League college funds and still have a place to live. How unreasonable of her family to not want her on the streets. Former coworkers offer a couch she won't take and actually let her live in her car without calling her brothers behind her back which I would absolutely do if I had a friend this dumb. She really made me want to scream.
Again, I love, love, LOVE every other book in this series and think this author is awesome. This one just didn't work for me. I wish it did.

Light the Lamp Portland Storm Book 4 edition by Catherine Gayle Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

There is no denying that I am a HUGE Catherine Gayle fan! (Heck, I’m even quoted on the cover of this one!!) So when I had the opportunity to receive and eARC of Light the Lamp and participate in the blog tour? I jumped at the chance! (And I picked today because it’s my 10th wedding anniversary, so why not share a book I ADORE on this day?)

Liam and Noelle have both experienced more loss in life (at such early ages) than anyone should have to experience. That’s what Catherine Gayle does, she grabs your heart and just twists – and she’s good at it. And because of this loss, Liam is incredibly over protective and Noelle fiercely independent which makes for a fun (and combustible) combination! Liam’s overbearing nature gets a bit annoying, as does Noelle’s stubbornness – but this sweet story makes that easy to overlook.

As per the norm with the Portland Storm books, the surrounding characters make this story worth it on so many levels. Especially Babs. Always Babs. (I have a special place in my heart for that kid!) I just love this team and their wives, I love how they take care of one another and how they are a family. I love to imagine myself slipping into their little group, and Catherine Gayle’s writing makes that possible.

Tragedy in a book is something that can go really well, or just flop. Luckily, in this case it’s done well and you feel their pain and want to reach out and hug them. There is something about Catherine Gayle that makes her characters so realistic, and for this I absolutely adore her.

If you haven’t read the previous Portland Storm Books (Breakaway and On The Fly – followed by her Novella in Seduced By The Game) I would strongly recommend starting with those – but if you’re a fan of Sports Romance? Then Catherine Gayle needs to be on your must-read list!!
I have read all the books in the Portland Storm series, and this has been my least favorite.

Light the Lamp is the story of Liam Kallen and Noelle Payne. Liam has recently been traded to the Storm and is still mourning the death of his wife, who was killed in a freak accident months before. He meets Noelle on the side of the road when she is having car trouble and convinces her to come with him while she figures out what to do next. Noelle is living in her car at the time, and minutes after she rides off with Liam, her car is involved in another incident and she loses everything except the clothes on her back. Because of the specter of his wife's death, Liam feels compelled to take care of her.

My problem with this book is that I felt neither of the main characters were very relatable. Noelle especially was annoying and difficult to like. She is depicted as free spirited and absent minded, and I just couldn't figure out what these two saw in each other.
I tried with this one but sadly at around 35% I could not even force myself to turn to the next page. I have read the previous books in this series and enjoyed them. I am not sure what happened with this one but I am surprised that I could even read as much as I did with all of the eye rolling that I was doing. I understand as much if not better than the next romance novel lover that you have to be willing to suspend reality with many books in this genre but this was just pathetic. Really...he picked up a woman on the side of the road and took her home with him after knowing her for 5 minutes AND she goes with him? I understand the angle that the author was going for with the H being a somewhat new widow and feeling like he needed to do as much as he could to honor her memory but by only little more than a quarter a way through the book if felt that if I had to see his deceased wife's name one more time or hear him say how he felt like he was cheating on her by just doing some innocent flirting I was going to scream. If this was not bad enough...SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT AHEAD...when I got to the part where she said that she has always had this ability to feel and take in other peoples pain and then she has to find a way to expel it I knew that was the point of no return for me.
I absolutely adore this entire series, except for this one. It's just too farfetched.
