Excellent novel. In his Introduction the Author explains that Overreach is a work of fiction with some "provocative issues have been taken from today's front pages" and boy is that an understatement. Be sure to read the Introduction and then it will not take you long to start reading about events that have already happened and are currently happening in the USA.

As the author said, Overreach is sold as a fictional novel but I believe it is actually a fact/fiction novel, with only some of the names having been changed. A main character is stand up U. S. Army Colonel Ty Denham (retired) and in that man I recognize a real stand up LTC American Army Officer (retired). When you read the book perhaps you will understand to whom I am referring. And I think a number of other characters might resemble other actual people even thought the book is fiction.

The basic operational plan identified in the beginning of the book reminds me of a number of govt activities already taking place and the remainder of the book includes fictional armed conflict that are good scenarios if the situation was being war gamed.

I believe the fact part of the book begins with the first chapter and continues to the point of a fictional explosion of an aircraft approaching a military base in Nevada and activities of a fictional military sniper on the National Mall. That fictional gathering on the Mall reminds me of the real gathering of Tea Party groups in Washington on 9/12/2009 and 9/12/2010, because we were there.

One of the things Col. Denham does is to create a thumb (flash) drive to preserve information and manuals in the event of a catastrophic event. Such an event could be an EMP/CME or wide spread power outages caused by other events such as an terrorist attack on our grid, like the real April 2013 terrorist attack on a substation in San Jose, Ca.

Overreach is not an EMP event novel but does include loss of our power grid infrastructure and civilian communications. I do not think this will comment will spoil the plot and I found it very interesting how well the characters reacted. To me that showed very creative thinking by the author. As far as Col. Denham's thumb drive is concerned, I would really like to have one, just in case.

This a fictional novel about many current events happening in the USA.

Again, great novel in the Overreach trilogy. Looking forward to Book #2

Jeff Ludwig takes the reader on a heart-pounding journey across the intersection of power and raw ambition. The title of course, is from the letter of Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith in 1787.
This is an inspired political thriller with action and gritty dialogue. Already I am looking forward to Ludwig's next novel!

OK, Full Disclosure, I am the editor Jeff worked with on this book but I still want to say that it was one of the best--no, it was definitely the best manuscript that has come through my hands this year. It has deep political issues in the form of a page-turning thriller. I definitely recommend it.
This is an incredible novel and a great start to a trilogy. This is not some far-fetched impossible to understand jump of some radical,fighting against impossible odds for no reason. This is not some soap opera drama. This is a slow grind of inevitability the real question is merely what is the triggering event. The initial character development is a little light but deepens as the book goes.

While the premise of shutting down the grid from the top is a cool idea, it's a little far fetched. Even the most idiotic tyrants know to keep the lights on.

The Mass distribution plot is a great story arc. It really opens up the story to new characters and gives them context of their actions.

Buy the book for Pete's sake. My only issue is I need to have this story done soon. I fear getting the next only only to then wait for the third.
JD Ludwig has written one of those old-fashioned, good guy versus bad guy stories that makes you just want to stand up for something important. It's a literary cross between Seven Days in May and Atlas Shrugged, a novel that some will call "reactionary", some will call "fanatical", and some will call "patriotic." I call it, "a damn good story". It is full of humor, and details about how the US military and the US government work. It is full of fun, interesting, inspiring, and despicable characters. It is full of...well, life and honor, and standing up for what matters. Okay, I'll sit down now, but read this book! Before a drone visits your neighborhood...
I found out about this book through a posting on our bulletin board at work where an employee had commented about the author being from the area. I would imagine it was also posted in light of recent legislation that was passed here in NY that has many pro 2A supporters and outdoorsmen upset. I downloaded the book and finished it over the weekend. Although this is the first novel by the author, one would never know that. I enjoyed the book immensely and it was an easy read. Character development was great and very believable, which is important to me as a reader.

I have always enjoyed dystopian works of fiction but most dystopian works I have read are futuristic and are usually based on events that happen long after a collapse of some sort. What is disturbing about this story is the fact that the issues are current and real-world. I won’t write any spoiler here but will say what I took away from this book. In looking at why people in power do what they do, especially when I am in complete disagreement with them, I have not stopped to think about the fact that they might honestly believe their doing so is for the greater good despite being to the detriment of others, or worse, a majority. When I think about this, this holds true in everything from something as simple as a Little League board to something as complex as a corporation or government. Power can be abused at any level.

I strongly recommend this book and am looking forward to second book!
