Complete Adventures of the Borrowers Mary Norton 9780152198503 Books
This is a childhood must. Must. Absolute must. Something about the incredible creativity and wholesomeness of this book puts it on my most dear classics shelf next to Narnia, Pooh, Paddington, Betsy Tacy, Stuart Little, Five Children and It and Cowboy Small. The Borrowers is magical and creative and full of wonder and awe. My 3, 5 & 7 year olds sat listening to me read with rapt attention and genuine affection for this treasure. In many stories we talk about the power or genius coming from specific characters, events or actions. In Narnia we love Aslan and the story arc and values that inspire greatness in the characters. In Pooh we revel in the simple wholesome attitudes of friendship and love that permeate all of the decisions. In the Borrowers, we do not look to the book for the genius but the author. A bit like Tolkien in Middle Earth, we celebrate not what happens in the book but the actual landscape that Norton has created. It isn't that we particularly love Homily or Pod or that we can really relate to Arrietty that prompts us to keep reading. It is more of our own curiosity about HOW they live that propels us forward. Before there is any doll furniture in the house, these little people "borrow" everyday items from the rest of us that they use in totally different ways for their everyday existence... postage stamps as wall art... blotting paper as rugs... carpet fibers turned into brushes... safety pins used as grappling hooks. These little Borrowers teach us much about creative ingenuity and stewardship of resources all while we are having incredible fun!
I am so very glad that this is only the first in a series of books and that many have said that the others are equally good.

Complete Adventures of the Borrowers Mary Norton 9780152198503 Books Reviews
Loved the first one as a child, and now reading the whole series to my own daughter. She lives the Borrowers and finds them as intriguing as I did as a child!
When I ordered these books as a collection, I had seen the other review saying the pages were worn and should have received a average rating. So i expected to enjoy reading these stories again but with some old, worn pages. No biggie for me, because I would do anything to get these stories to read again.
I had received it about 4 days later, over the weekend, it was packaged very well, wrapped in plastic, and all brand new, Wow, what a surprise!!
I have nothing bad to report about this purchase or how it was delivered.
The one thing my heart wishes about it, is I wish they were all hardback books instead of soft. I don't know, maybe thats what i remember holding when I read them when i was a kid. I'm 43 now and can see the story unfold in my head without the books but love to see it all in my head again when I read them.
This was my favorite series in 4th grade. Charming stories of little people who live in mouse holes in a grand English home and "borrow" household items to live.
My son (age 9) loves this series!! He can't put it down!
Great set of all the Borrower's books! I read them all when I was 10 (now 50 something ;) , read them to my daughters (now 30 somethings) and bought this set for my 'adopted' grandchild age 10, in Kigali Rwanda. She is attending a great "English" school, and reads like a dream, so I wanted her to have this very special book series. My daughter just brought them to her last week in Kigali, and she was so excited, she has already finished the first book!
There are no libraries in Rwanda so books, especially in English, are very hard to come by. Adults and children alike, share books theirs with friends, so her friend got "The Borrowers", as she is now starting the next one! Many girls, even boys, there will have a chance to share this set! I am thrilled!
I used to read The Borrowers as a child (probably at 12 or 13 yrs?) and I really enjoyed them at the time. I just recently bought this set. I was also hoping to introduce them to an 8 year old friend of mine. While they proved too challenging for her, I thoroughly enjoyed rereading them myself. They are very well-written, the characters are rich and realistic (even if they are under a foot tall!), and the stories are exciting. I believe most children ages 11 and up who enjoy reading will appreciate these. The main character, Arriety, is about 13 years old, and she goes through bits of teenaged angst and frustration that we can all relate to. Living under the floor all her life, she longs for adventures in the outdoors, and she eventually gets her wish, even as her mother frets over all dangers. The illustrations are lively and expressive black and white drawings.
There is a new animated movie coming out soon, which looks okay. But I say get these books and read them while you still can and enjoy them before the movie images take over how you picture the characters in your own imagination!
This is one of my favorite book series from when I was a girl in the 1960s. I bought the set to share with my great-grandson who just finished first grade. He's a very good reader and is already on the second book. He's so proud of himself, being able to read "chapter books" without a lot of pictures in them. It's his first experience letting his imagination draw the scenes in his mind and it's a lot of fun for me to watch that happen. I'm glad I made this purchase.
